Thimble Gauge
Professional thimble gauge shows your thimble size instantly...no guesswork

Finally, a handy tool that tells what thimble size is best for you. Durable thimble gauge determines your metric thimble size from 13 mm to 20 mm and English sizes from #4 to #13.

What is Your Thimble Size?
This professional heavy duty plastic thimble gauge from the Lacis Museum of Lace and Textiles is just what you need to find which thimble size fits you best.

How it Works
No more guessing which thimble size you need. The heavy-duty plastic thimble gauge reveals your thimble size instantly with precision. Just insert your finger through opening and read the size.

Fitting Instructions
Insert finger through opening:
  1. If first joint of finger cannot fit past opening, then size is too small.
  2. If first joint of finger can pass through opening without touching, then size is too big.
  3. If first joint of finger passes through while lightly touching opening, then size is just right.
How to Find the Perfect Fit
Truth in Advertising: There is no perfect fit.

Fact is, no thimble gauge is perfect. That's because no thimble size is perfect. The actual fit is determined by your finger shape and the width, length and design of the thimble. So while your favorite 19 mm thimble might fit your finger perfectly, a different style 19 mm thimble might not fit the same finger at all.

Then there is the fact that the size and suppleness of your finger varies throughout the day. So while your favorite thimble feels great in the morning, it might not fit as well later that same afternoon.

Even changes in the weather affect the way a thimble fits you. So if the humidity is high or a storm is brewing, then your favorite thimble might not fit the same way following the downpour. So, what is a serious washboard musician supposed to do?

Bracket Your Thimble Sizes
How do you find a thimble that fits? The best way to overcome the variances in finger shape and thimble design is to bracket your thimble sizes. In other words, make sure you have a thimble that is sized "just right," plus get a thimble that is slightly smaller—and one that is slightly larger. That way you will always have a thimble that fits.

This Thimble Gauge makes that an easy task. The thimbles in this shop are graded by size in millimeters. Thimble sizes in millimeters are immensely easier to understand than weird fractions. What about those compilations of international ring sizes? Forget it. They're nuts. Yes, millimeters are the easiest way to tell one thimble size from the next. Besides, if you need to order within fine tolerances, then a thimble gauge in millimeters definitely helps you narrow down the playing field so you can make a reasonably accurate choice.

Between you and me, even when I try on the actual thimbles for size, some sizes are so similar that I still can't tell which size I like best for which finger. That's because the size on each side adjacent to the "perfect" size usually fits almost as good. For example, if the perfect size for your index finger is 15.5 mm, then a 15 mm and 16 mm thimble will probably work too. That's why I think your best bet is to bracket your selection with a couple extra sizes. That way you will cover your bases and have a few extra thimbles for backup. Of course, since you might end up with a handful of nearly identical thimbles, then you might want to mark them (example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Pinky is #1) so you know which thimble fits best with which finger!

Inconsistent Thimble Sizes not a Problem Anymore
The Zalkin's Handbook of Thimbles and Sewing Implements tells it short and sweet: "Thimble sizes are not standard. Each country has its own thimble sizing system." So if you are trying to figure out what size thimbles you need to scratch that washboard, then this professional quality Thimble Gauge from Lacis is about as good as it gets.
