Why Choose these Thimbles?
If you want distinctly affordable thimbles that are light in weight; generate a nice moderate "thunky" tone; fun to play and gentle on your vintage rubbing surface, then these pint-sized wooden rascals are definitely for you.

How Many Thimbles do you Need?
The number of thimbles you need for each hand is a personal preference. Most players use 3 thimbles (index, middle and ring fingers). Others add a 4th thimble to their pinky. Many prefer just 2 thimbles (index and middle fingers). Some players use just one thimble (typically index or middle finger). However, many players use 4 thimbles on their fingers, plus a large 5th thimble (typically 18 mm to 20 mm) on their thumb for a "full-house" of 5 thimbles. You can achieve greater musical color with more thimbles than less. But the optimum number of thimbles depends on the musical genre, type of thimble (wood, plastic, metal, horn), your personal playing style, and ultimately—what works best for you.

I think these are pretty neat, especially for unamplified music situations where you would like your washboard to be a tad more laid back and mellow.

The wood has a softer contact with the washboard's surface which removes the bright “metal to metal attack” and accentuates the board's lower frequencies. This makes a drastic difference on both my Columbus zinc and stainless steel washboards and a less obvious and more subtle difference on my brass boards and Zinc Kings. This is most likely due to the relative softness of brass and the fact that the Zinc King's metal rubbing surface is in contact with it's wood backing and also that mine have been repaired with two composite epoxy glue which already gave them a thicker sound.

They immediately felt smooth for both taping and rubbing, skimming over the washboard's playing surface ribs; their top is a lot wider than on metal thimbles too.

My biggest worry was that they would be relatively fragile and would easily break, but after a month of using them there is no sign of distress and I must say they feel really solid. Unfortunately at 16.5 mm they're not for small hands although I'm sure there are ways to work around that. A little ball of Tac Putafix a “blu-tack” type adhesive on the tip of my thinner ring finger was enough to keep them from falling off for instance. In any case the size is the only downside to these so if you're looking for an alternative to the bright sound of metal they are certainly thimbles to try.
